Recognize the changes

Low testosterone

Possible symptoms include:

  • Reduced sex drive or erectile changes
  • Low energy or persistent fatigue
  • Reduced muscle mass or strength
  • Low mood or trouble concentrating

Perimenopause

The transition leading up to menopause may bring:

  • Irregular or changing periods
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Mood changes or brain fog

Menopause

Usually defined as 12 months without a period, when no other cause explains it. Symptoms can include:

  • Ongoing hot flashes or night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Changes in sexual comfort or desire
  • Sleep and mood concerns

These symptoms can overlap with other conditions. Symptoms alone do not diagnose low testosterone, perimenopause or menopause; an individual clinical assessment is essential.

Hormone replacement therapy

For confirmed low testosterone

Testosterone replacement therapy may be considered when symptoms and appropriately timed blood tests confirm a deficiency. Your clinician reviews possible causes, benefits and risks before recommending treatment. Testosterone can reduce sperm production and may not be suitable if you are planning to have children.

For perimenopause and menopause

Menopausal hormone therapy may help with bothersome hot flashes and night sweats. Options may include estrogen, with progesterone or another progestogen usually needed if you have a uterus. Local vaginal treatments may be considered for dryness or discomfort. Your age, symptoms and medical history help guide the choice.

A plan built around your health

Hormone therapy is not right for everyone. Your team considers clotting risks, certain cancers, cardiovascular health and other medical factors. Non-hormonal treatments, sleep, nutrition and physical activity may also be part of your care. Menopausal hormone therapy is not contraception.

Assessment first. Ongoing care after.

Start with your RN assessment and bloodwork if clinically indicated. Your physician and RN review the findings with you. If treatment is appropriate, your care team monitors symptoms, relevant tests and side effects, and adjusts your plan as needed.
